The house at the end of Bellhaven Point was built in 1889 by a man who wanted to see weather coming. It has eleven windows on the seaward side and two on the landward, which tells you most of what you need to know about him.

NARRATOR

The Marchettis took it for the winter. Four hundred a month, which in January on that coast is not a bargain so much as a question nobody had asked out loud.

ANNA MARCHETTI

I want to be clear that I had a deadline. That is the entire reason we were there. People have since suggested other reasons and there were no other reasons.

NARRATOR

On the second morning, Sam Marchetti — he was nine — came in from the beach and said there were footprints. His father said that was because it was a beach.

SAM MARCHETTI

I said they started in the water. And he said everything on a beach starts in the water. And I said no, they start in the water. Twenty feet out. Like somebody stood up.

NARRATOR

Rob Marchetti went down to look, because that is what you do. He was gone eleven minutes. When he came back he did not say anything about the footprints at all. He checked the back door, and then a few minutes later he checked it again.
